MNU Invites Public to Experience Week of Scholarship April 7-11

OLATHE, KAN, -- MidAmerica Nazarene University’s first annual Week of Scholarship April 7 -11, 2014, is an exciting celebration of creativity, research and academic achievement by students and faculty. MNU invites community members to attend these events. Most events are free.

The Week of Scholarship is MNU’s invitation to the public to experience something of the caliber of education that is available at MNU, according to Mary Jones, PhD, provost.

“MNU has an amazing faculty and student body, and it is exciting to be able to celebrate and share what is happening on our campus academically,” Jones says. “Throughout the week faculty and students will present the best of what MNU has to offer in scholarship and compelling, captivating and thoughtful ideas. We hope the surrounding community will join us for any and all of these entertaining learning opportunities.”

Tuesday, April 8, begins with an exclusive Scholar Visit Day for high-achieving high school students. Students will visit classes, meet professors and learn more about MNU’s exclusive Honors Program for high achievers. Prospective students interested in Scholar Visit day can visit the link above for more information.

The premier event of the week is the 7x7 Challenge April 8. Featuring a format similar to TED Talks, the event features 7 MNU professors presenting individual 7-minute lectures on innovative topics in their area of expertise. The audience chooses the winner of "The Golden Brain” award. The program starts at 7:07 p.m. in Bell Cultural Events Center. No tickets are necessary and admission is free.

Graphically representing their research, MNU faculty will host a poster presentation in Bell Cultural Events Center Grand Lobby Wednesday, April 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. Current MNU students will present their research posters, also in Bell Cultural Events Center Thursday, April 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Networking expert Alana Muller will present Networking Skills for Increased Opportunities: A Practical Workshop, April 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Mabee Library. President of Kauffman FastTrac®, Muller will share useful information from her recently published book, Coffee Lunch Coffee and companion blog, CoffeeLunchCoffee.com, while leading participants in a variety of networking exercises. Though the workshop is presented free of charge, limited space does require registration.

The Week of Scholarship culminates April 11 with the President's Honors Gala, MNU's premier fundraising event to benefit student scholarships at 6:30 p.m. in Cook Center. In its first two years, generous donors contributed more than $750,000 through sponsorships, auction purchases and attendance. The event features an elegant dinner, live and silent auctions, entertainment and celebrations of generosity. This year’s event is projected to raise an additional $500,000 for scholarship purposes. Tickets for the Gala start at $100 and sponsorships still are available.
