Deaf Artists Retreat: De’VIA – Past, Present and for Posterity
Thirty-six Deaf artists, art teachers, and Deaf Studies teachers will be participating in a two and one-half day retreat on the Kansas School for the Deaf campus. The following states across the country will be represented: Washington, Illinois, Arizona, California, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland, New York, and Washington, DC.
Akihiro Yonaiyama, Deaf artist from Japan and former roommate of Chuck Baird, will also be in attendance. There may also be a participant, via videophone from Paris, France.

The purpose for this retreat will be to focus on the beginning development of cross-curricular planning of De’VIA at all educational levels for schools across the country.

The retreat starts on Wednesday, June 26 at 8am and continues throughout the day until 4pm. Thursday, June 27 will have a similar schedule, with wrap-up, Friday, June 28 from 8am – noon.

Wine and Cheese Soiree: Meet the Artists!

Nineteen De’VIA artists from across the country will be taking time from their retreat for a party at the Deaf Cultural Center. Attendees will have the chance to talk with the artists and learn about their work. [Interpreters will be available.]

The first 250 attendees will receive a magnetic badge celebrating 200 years of Deaf Art. There will also be the following door prize drawings:
• One package of De’VIA note cards (20), featuring the art work of Chuck Baird
• Beautiful art De’VIA piece [worthy of framing!] depicting a Sunflower
• Deaf Artists in America: Colonial to Contemporary, by Deborah M. Sonnenstrahl
• And possibly more surprises!

There will be a limited number of 2014-2015 calendars for sale ($25), featuring the De’VIA art work from these artists and many others.

Downtown Olathe Art Festival / Deaf Art Festival

More than 100 art booths will be set up in the downtown area of Olathe, Kansas, featuring juried art works in a variety of mediums.

Deaf Artists setting up booths during this festival include:

• Nancy Rourke, Colorado
• Tony Fowler, Colorado
• David Call, California
• Ellen Mansfield, Maryland\
• Janna Dahl, Arizona (originally from Russia)

These artists will be selling both De’VIA art work and non-De’VIA art work, including limited edition art pieces.

Several of the Deaf artists will be stationed at the Children’s Tent to capture stories from the young patrons and create an art piece. Stage performance will include:

• Our Younger Generation: students from pre-school to recent high school graduates, performing ASL Poetry and ABC Stories. Many thanks to Jennifer Carlino, KSD Drama teacher and Nancy Milner, KSD Pre-school teacher for arranging these performances.
