Event Description: DEAF AWARENESS WEEK September 19-27, 2014 For more information on any events please contact The Deaf Cultural Center. What’s happening in the Kansas City: Friday, September 19: KAD is sponsoring the KAI-RID Deaf Parisian Wine & Cheese Party at the Deaf Cultural Center, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Wear black and white to be in the theme and bring your own wine glass! Saturday, September 20: The Whole Person is hosting free tours of Kansas City’s Famed Pilgrim Lutheran Church for the Deaf, 3801 Gillham Road, Kansas City, MO, from noon to 1:00pm. Tours, fellowship, light snacks and drinks will be provided also at The Whole Person facility, 3710 Main Street, Kansas City, MO, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. The Whole Person will also have information about various church, synagogue, and places of worship that provide ASL and signed services. Sunday, September 21: Free Family Festival featuring The Plains Indians: Artists of Earth and Sky at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, with interpreted events, Noon – 4:00 pm. Monday, September 22: Town Hall Meeting at the Olathe Club for the Deaf, hosted by Hamilton Relay addressing Relay-Friendly Business calls. The event will be from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Reservations needed by September 16th. Tuesday, September 23: Silent Dinner, hosted by SKAI and Coalition for Independence. This will take place at Mi Ranchito on 87th in Lenexa, from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Please bring flyer with you. Wednesday, September 24: Discussion on Mental Health issues and Hearing Loss, hosted by HLAA-KC, Deaf Professionals Network, and the Kansas School for the Deaf. This will take place in the large meeting room at Leawood Pioneer Library, 4700 Town Center Dr., Leawood, KS 66211. CART and interpreters will be provided. Thursday, September 25: Deaf Cultural Center Open House for businesses following the Olathe Chamber of Commerce Coffee, from 11:00 – 1:00, hosted by KCDHH. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Informational booths will be set up in the lobby, providing a variety of information useful for businesses. The DCC Patio Party will be from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Cost is $5 for DCC members, $10 for guests. Membership forms will be available. Jeanne Ewald will be presenting the story of the connection formed between Philip Emery, first KSD superintendent and Baker University, located in Baldwin City, Kansas. Friday, September 26: [Information on movie theaters that provide open captioned films or other captioning options.] Saturday, September 27: The Deaf Cultural Center will be holding an Open House for Children, 10:00 am –3:00 pm. There will be fun, games, stories and goodies for children of all ages. What’s happening in Wichita: Deaf Awareness Week Events Saturday, Sept. 20th--3rd Annual Barnes & Noble Book Fair ASL Activities from 10am to 2pm with prize drawings and live performances. Our book fair code is: 11410222. Join us online all during Deaf Awareness Week by going to. www.BN.COM/bookfairs. Great time to do early Christmas shopping! We are building our ASL lending library so parents can check out books and videos to help the whole family learn sign language. Friday, Sept. 26th--Deaf Ninja on the Rooftop 360 degree view of Wichita in the Penthouse at the Mayflower Plaza on 209 E. William St. in downtown Wichita. 6pm BBQ dinner sold by the Penthouse 7pm ASL Power! and Variety Show with Austin Andrews, "Deaf Ninja" $10 admission for performance and variety show 9-11pm Deaf Teen Roof Party $3 Fun activities and hanging out with Austin Andrews on the roof top! Saturday, Sept. 27th--ASL Real World Depiction and Personification Workshop 9am to 11:30am Morning Session 11:30 to 12:45 LUNCH ($10 plated lunch sold by the Penthouse) 1pm to 4:30 pm Afternoon Session Fee: $65; $60 for KAI-RID members Sponsor opportunities still available for table booths!
