KANSAS CITY, Mo. –Turner Construction Company, the nation’s leading general builder, has achieved a significant milestone as a result of the company’s commitment to Green Building practices. Turner now counts 1,186 LEED Accredited Professionals (APs) on staff. Building
Design + Construction has recognized Turner as having more LEED APs than any other firm in the architectural, engineering and construction industry, and with the company’s $3 billion of green construction volume in 2008, Turner was additionally recognized as the leading Green builder in the publication’s 2009 Giants 300 rankings.
Thirty-five percent of the construction staff working in Turner’s Kansas City office is LEED Accredited, allowing the company to be uniquely positioned to meet the green building needs of our clients and the community in the local market.
Turner’s LEED APs have enabled the company to complete 85 projects that have been LEED Certified by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). An additional 131 Turner projects are LEED Registered. The firm’s sustainable construction work has grown to 40 percent of its backlog. Turner’s green building projects are in wide array of building types, including education, commercial, healthcare and aviation.
Turner’s local office is a Certified LEED Interiors project. The 16,000 sq. ft. space includes bamboo flooring, low VOC paints and adhesives, and carpet made from recycled content. The project involved the re-use of as many existing doors, ceilings and walls as possible, as well as featured many locally-manufactured products.
Turner recently completed the new Upper Elementary School for the Odessa School District. The project implemented numerous green features, such as a ground well heating and cooling system, daylight views in all classrooms, bicycle storage and changing rooms, water efficient landscaping, regional material, and site development that maximized open space. Turner is currently leading the expansion to the Olathe Police
Building, which is incorporating several green features, including a geothermal heating/cooling loop, low-emitting materials, a rain garden, and a white roof, which will reflect the sun’s rays, creating a cooler building and reducing energy costs.
Turner’s most recent green project award involves construction management services for the University of Kansas Hospital Medical Office Building, a $55 million project that will seek LEED Certification when it is completed in 2011. Environmentally-friendly features of the building will include water-efficient landscaping, access to public transportation, energy performance optimization, thermal comfort
controls and the use of recycled and locally manufactured materials.
Turner opened the Kansas City office in 1988 and is celebrating 20 successful years of building in Kansas City. The office serves the four-state region of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, and has grown to be one of Kansas City’s largest construction companies.
