Chamber supports City’s Street Preservation Sales Tax proposal

After review from the Chamber’s Business to Government Committee, the Olathe Chamber Board of Directors has voted to endorse the City of Olathe Street Preservation Sales Tax proposal – a 10-year, 3/8th cent sales tax to support a shortfall in Olathe’s street maintenance funding.

The Chamber supports the City in its proposal, which would generate an additional $9.26 million per year average needed to adequately fund street maintenance over the next 10 years. The proposed budget would increase the number of arterial mill and overlay lane mile projects from 15 to 30. Without the funding, the cost of maintaining streets will increase exponentially.

The Street Maintenance Sales Tax election will be voted on via mail-in ballots which will be sent to residents beginning October 23. Ballots must be returned by noon on November 12, and if approved, the sales tax collection would begin on April 1, 2014. Click here to learn more about the Street Maintenance Sales Tax election.
